Courtsy of Minhaj-Ul-Quran

                                        By Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

The word qurbani embraces vast scope of meaning. This is derived from word qurb (nearness). Therefore the act of qurbani denotes the nearness to Allah Almighty. Technically, the word qurbani refers to the sacrificing of animals on the occasion of Eid al-Adha with a view to achieving the nearness to Him. In the wider context, it means sacrificing everything one possesses in the way of Allah like life, wealth, honour and comfort etc. The 162nd verse of Sura al-Anam states: "My prayers, my Hajj (Pilgirmage) and sacrifice (with all my acts of worship) and my life and my death are for Allah alone Who is the Lord of all the worlds."
Historical background of slaughter

The act of slaughtering lawful animals as a means for achieving nearness to Allah Almighty dates back to the time when Hadrat Adam (as) came to the world. The Holy Qur`an has made mention of the first sacrifice offered in the way of Allah by the sons of Hadrat Adam, Habeel and Qabeel. Although these sons of Adam started the tradition of slaughter but it gained eternal popularity through the incident that involved Hadrat Ibrahim (as) and Hadrat Ismail (as). This slaughter is the reflection of the greatest slaughter offered on the face of earth. Thus in order to commemorate the sacrifice offered by Hadrat Ibrahim and Hadrat Ismail till the Day of Judgment, the Muslims were enjoined to perform the act of slaughter on 10th of Dhil-Hajj during every Islamic year.
Aims and Objectives

Slaughtering is not merely a ritual but it is a means to the following ends.

1. It is the Sunna of Huzrat Ibrahim (RA), which has been invested with permanence among the followers of Islam and they have been enjoined to perform this act practically in order to revive its spirit. As Allah Almighty says in the Holy Quran: "And We have appointed a sacrifice for every people". (al-Hajj, 34:22)

Allah Almighty has given the status of worship to following the Sunna of Hadrat Ibrahim (as). Hadrat Zaid Bin Arqam reports that the Companions asked, "O Prophet of Allah! what is this slaughter. He (saw) replied: It is Sunna of your father Hadrat Ibrahim (as). The Companions asked: will we get any reward from this slaughter. He replied: you will get reward against every hair (of sacrificial animals). The Companions asked: if it be lamb. He replied: still you would get reward against every hair." (Sunan Ibn Maja)

Hadrat Abu Huraira reports: "When the Holy Prophet (saw) would make up his mind about the slaughter, he would buy two lambs of black colour and horns having good bodily health. He would slaughter one of them on behalf of every one from his Umma who believed in Oneness of Allah and finality of the Prophethood and he would slaughter the other one on his and his children's behalf." (Sunan Ibne Maja)

Hadrat Hanash reports: "When I saw Hadrat Ali (ra) slaughtering lamb, I asked him as to what it was? He said: the Holy Prophet (saw) had advised him to offer sacrifice on his behalf. Therefore (in view of his advice) I am offering this sacrifice on his behalf." (Sunan Abi Dawood)

This stands established from this that the Holy Prophet (saw) slaughtered (animals) not only on his and his family's behalf but also on behalf of his Umma till the Day of Judgment. Allah Almighty blessed him (saw) with this act for commemoration and revival of the Sunna of Hadrat Ibrahim (as). That is why he (saw) advised Hadrat Ali (ra) to continue with this act of slaughter on his own and Prophet's (saw) behalf. Hadrat Ali (ra) acted upon this piece of advice all his life.

Following in the footprints of Sunna of Hadrat Ibrahim (as) not only keeps the memory of his actions alive but also inspires us to implement them in our lives. The Sunna of Ibrahim (as) reminds the Muslim Umma of its commitment that it would leave no stone unturned to render any kind of sacrifice for the revival of faith. If this pledge is missing, then slaughtering is merely a ritual devoid of its substance.

2. The second aim of slaughter is to create the feelings of sacrifice among the Muslims. That is why Allah Almighty enjoined upon the Muslims to perform this act till the Day of Reckoning. This worship is known as Sunna of the Holy Prophet (saw) and Hadrat Ibrahim (as) without any dispute. One hadith contained in Jami Tirmidhi is narrated by Hadrat Abdullah ibn Umar (ra): "The Holy Prophet (saw) lived in the holy city of Madina for ten years and he did slaughtering (of animals)."

The real of aim of slaughter is to create and foster the feelings of sacrifice among the Muslims so that they should remain ready to sacrifice anything dear to them in the cause of Allah.

3. Every action leaves its impact upon human personality, self and heart, but there are specific actions, which are instrumental in achieving nearness to Allah Almighty. Slaughtering is also one such act but it can only succeed in fulfilling its purpose if it is aimed at winning the pleasure of Allah Almighty. He says in the Holy Qur`an: "It is neither the meat (of slaughtered animals) nor their blood that reaches Allah but it is the piousness that reaches Him from you." (al-Hajj, 22:37)

On this basis, the drop of blood of slaughtered animals does not yet fall on the ground when Allah Almighty accepts in His Company and rewards those who offer sacrifice. Hadrat 'A'isha (ra) narrates that the Holy Prophet (saw) said: "No act of a person is dearer to Allah on the day of slaughter than spilling of blood and that (slaughtered) animal would become alive again with his horns and forefeet intact. Allah Almighty grants high status to blood before it falls down on ground. You should be pleased with your slaughtering." (Jami Tirmidhi)

What is a prerequisite for acceptance of slaughter is the possession of good intentions and sincerity of heart. If an action, even though it may be a small one, is performed with full measure of sincerity, elevates its performer. And if the same action is devoid of sincerity and good intentions in spite of its enormity would be of no consequence near Allah Almighty. If the aim of slaughter is the demonstration of wealth, status and an attempt to impress others, such an action may deceive people but will not be rewarded by Allah Almighty. Contrary to this, a poor person can enjoy great esteem in the sight of Allah who is penniless but has burning urge to implement His Sunna of slaughter but is constrained to do this due to lack of wealth. Therefore, it is the intention, with which the act of the slaughter is performed, which is more important than anything else is. Allah Almighty says: "And he who honours the Signs of Allah (ie honouring those living beings, shrines, monumental sites, commands and prescribed duties known and recognized due to some association or link with Allah or Allah's servants), this (honouring) is from the piousness of hearts (only those submit themselves in honour of the sanctities, whose hearts have been filled with fear of God)."(al-Hajj, 22:32)

This Divine commandment dubs piety as state of heart. The sacrificial animals are sign of Allah because they are slaughtered for achieving nearness to Him. Since they have their association with Allah, that is why, they form part of signs of Allah. The Holy Qur`an says: "And We have made for you sacrificial animals (camels and cows etc) among the Signs of Allah." (al-Hajj, 22:36)

In the light of the dictates and commandments of the Holy Qur`an and Sunna, man can easily reach this conclusion that it is not the apparent shape or form of an object but the piety of hearts and inherent intentions, which is instrumental for achieving the nearness of Allah. The ultimate goal of qurbani is attainment of piety. If this is not achieved, then it is merely reduced to a ritual act. Therefore slaughtering should always be performed with the intention to achieve nearness to Allah.

Call for condemning and removing the blasphemous page on social network website.

Image

Kaluwal.com: The extremist malicious elements have most condemnably launched a page on the social network website for the world’s most sacrilegious event to draw sketches of our beloved Messenger Muhammad (blessings and peace be upon him). Their heinous designs intend to provoke the sentiments of billions of Muslims over the globe and force the world peace into the firestorm of outrageous protests and destructive demonstrations. Their sole objective is to injure the hearts of Muslims all over the world, and mire the international peace struggle steered by the peace loving Muslim communities into volcanic eruption of provocative protests.

The Minhaj-ul-Quran International most strongly condemns this spiteful conspiracy against the Muslims of the world and the peace process, and urges all the forces supporting the cause of peace, harmony, international brotherhood, co-existence and human rights to come forward and stop the atrocious extremists from playing a havoc with the Muslims of the world and humankind at large. They should get the most appallingly evil page removed from the social network website.

MQI urges on all peace loving countries and internet service providers to block the website immediately to control the desperate situation throughout the world, if the social network website fails to remove the blasphemous page from their network. The Minhaj-ul-Quran International also appeals all the Muslims of the world to understand the conspiracy and remain peaceful while protesting against the profane event of drawing unholy sketches and defeat the evil forces by safeguarding the global inter-faith harmony and the process of inter-communal integration among the world communities which the extremist element behind the scandalous event want to sabotage..We firmly believe that the TRUTH will prevail and the extremists and the evil enemies of the Muslims of the world and peaceful humankind will be disgracefully defeated in their sinful act of denigration and blasphemy.

Fatwa against terrorism.

Image

Kaluwal.com: Pakistan's success against homegrown terrorism has been recognized globally. So compelling has been the impact of the military's engagement with terrorists of different hues and colours but converging on their unanimity to taken on the state of Pakistan that every visiting dignitary has made it a point to visit Swat and get the first hand information about what has come to be known as Swat Success Model. Contrast this with the failures of the US-led war on terror in Afghanistan despite having abundant military and economic resources and interest of Pakistan's so-called allies becomes even keener. Emboldened by the success in the Malakand Division, the Pakistan Army chose to extend the operation to South Waziristan to dismantle the control and command structure and training camps of the terrorists.

Any attempt to simplify the complex problem of terrorism and attribute the recent success against it to merely military means would be tantamount to losing the larger picture. Military action no doubt played the most important role in eliminating the danger to the state and society and re-established the government's writ. However, what enabled the military and government of Pakistan to initiate action was the visible swing in public opinion against terrorism. Media also played critical in changing perceptions and educating people about the dangers associated with onward march of terrorism.

Having said that, it is pertinent to mention that Pakistan has merely achieved tactical success against terrorism and the monster can raise its head again if comprehensive course of action is not chalked out. Resting on past laurels can engender complacency with grave implications for the state and society. It needs to be remembered that terrorism, which represents a climactic point of militancy, is a process that emanates from radicalization and extremism. It is more a matter of mindset than a physical phenomenon.

Therefore in order to comprehensively defeat terrorism and eradicate its roots, the state needs to invest its energies in changing mindsets and perceptions of the people. It is a battle of ideas and an idea can get cancelled at the hands of a superior idea. Terrorists invoke religion and its teachings to justify their actions. Through their bigoted and misplaced interpretation of the Quranic text, they confuse the general people and win over the raw youth into their ranks by exploiting their emotions in the name of religion. It is in this area that the terrorists and their supporters need to be exposed.

This presents the context in which the importance of Fatwa issued by renowned scholar Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri can be understood. The Fatwa, which consists of more than 600 pages, is significant in a number of ways. The following is instructive in that regard:

One, this scholarly contribution in the form of Fatwa (religious decree) is the first of its kind that a man of immense erudition both in classical and contemporary sciences has made. Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri is one of Pakistan's top religious leaders with vast following not only in Pakistan but also in the rest of the world. No other scholar of his stature has come out so openly against terrorists.

Second, the Fatwa draws heavily on the Quranic text, hundreds of Hadith and exegesis of jurists of all schools of thoughts. It is a first scholarly attack on the terrorists' main contentions and exposes the fallacy of their understating of religion. It discusses all important and relevant issues such as Jihad and revolt in elaborate detail which the terrorists and their sympathizers have been harping upon to justify their otherwise reprehensible actions.

Third, the Fatwa is objective in its nature. It also discusses why the phenomenon of terrorism reached such alarming proportions besides offering ways and means to take care of the problem for good through corrective approach. It does not absolve the international powers and state agencies of their responsibility in promoting this scourge.

Fourth, the biggest service Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri has rendered to Islam is that he has presented true message of Islam in the West and tried to show a mirror to the anti-Islam elements. In the absence of intellectually credible Islamic narrative on terrorism and other affiliated matters, certain vested interests in the Western world have been having free run aimed at demonising Islam and bringing its fair name into disrepute. They have been demonstrating extremism of the other kind. Instead of taking broad-based review of why and how the Frankenstein monster of terrorism became so lethal, they have been prone to lay every blame at the door of Islam thereby implying that its teachings perhaps recommend coercion and use of violence against the non-Muslims. While quoting numerous original references, Dr Qadri has vehemently negated such assertions and stated the position of Islam on these issues in very candid manner. Thus the Fatwa is the first scholarly defence of Islam against charges of extremism, conservatism and terrorism.

Fifth, by virtue of his outreach and highly organized educational networks, Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri has reached out to the Muslim youth living in the western world. These youths are most susceptible to the calls of Jihad by terrorists and their patrons. Given their cultural, religious and identity crises, they are likelier to fall victim to the extremist organizations. This Fatwa, which is getting printed in a number of languages of the world including English, would help these otherwise intelligent Muslim youth to understand Islam in its entirety and reconsider the follies of their actions.

Al-Azhar University’s Co-ordination Office Established at Minhaj University

Image

Kaluwal.com: Al-Azhar University is the greatest and most ancient religious seat of learning of the Muslim world. In addition to scholarly, revolutionary, cultural and educational services rendered by the Al-Azhar University, what really characterizes it the most is the atmosphere of intellectual harmony and tolerance. The University has been serving the humanity in general and the Muslim Umma in particular since centuries. The Holy Quran, Hadith, Jurisprudence, History, Faith and Language are being taught in a very quiet and peaceful manner even in this day and age characterized by mischief and sectarianism. It is a hub of peace and inter-sect harmony where people belonging to different regions, languages, backgrounds and religious affiliations come but only to be sunk into the collective whole of a united Umma thanks to the services of the Al-Azhar University on these counts.

In a way, this seat of learning is the greatest blessing of Allah Almighty for the Muslim world where inclusive and balanced education is imparted. It goes to the credit of this University that interpreters of Sahih Bukhari such as Imam Ibn Hajar Asqalani, Imam Badr-ud-Din Aini, Imam Sakhawi, Imam Suyuti, Ibne Khaldun, and Jamal-ud-Din Afghani got education from it. Hundreds of people not only from Indo-Pakistan but also from Africa, Far East, Europe and America have been frequent visitors to this University for ages and have been quenching their scholarly thirst.

The topmost issues that have encircled the Muslim Umma are sectarianism and extremism in the contemporary age. They have now evolved into terrorism thereby hitting the world hard with its lethal attacks. The monster of terrorism is undermining the Muslim Umma very immensely brining its excellent traditions, religion and history into disrepute. In these deplorable circumstances, Al-Azhar University has taken the initiative and has decided to lead from the front by strengthening its constructive efforts. It has launched a project of Co-ordination Offices across the globe to streamline the coordination amongst its graduates spread over in the world and marshal their energies into productive use. This is being done to foster the feelings of tolerance and harmony by seeking the intervention of its scholars to come forward and clear the haze in the foggy atmosphere.

Pakistan occupies a unique place in that regard. A large number of its people have been the students at Al-Azhar University in different times.
